SUPPORTING LITTLE MILESTONES: Our Approach to Nappy Changing, Potty Training and Toilet Training at Daisy Fays

At Daisy Fays, we understand that personal care routines are far more than practical necessities — they are moments of connection, learning and trust. From the very first nappy change to the proud day a child confidently uses the toilet independently, these milestones form an important part of early childhood development.

Our approach is guided by respect, safeguarding, hygiene and partnership with families, ensuring every child feels safe, supported and confident at each stage of their journey.

Nappy Changing: Safe, Respectful and Nurturing Care

Nappy changing at Daisy Fays is carried out with the highest standards of care, safety and dignity. Dedicated nappy-changing areas are available in each nursery, equipped with secure changing tables for younger children and floor-level mats for older or more mobile children. These spaces are thoughtfully arranged to ensure privacy while allowing appropriate supervision at all times.

All personal care is carried out by fully trained practitioners who have undergone DBS checks and safeguarding training. For safeguarding reasons, students and volunteers do not undertake personal care tasks. Our team receive detailed training during induction and ongoing support through supervision, promoting transparency and confidence in our practice.

During each nappy change, practitioners engage warmly with children — chatting, singing or gently narrating the process. This transforms what could be a routine task into a calm, reassuring and interactive experience. Children are never left unattended, and physical contact is always maintained to ensure safety.

We also place great importance on hygiene. Practitioners wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), thoroughly clean changing areas after every use and carefully record each nappy change in line with our procedures. Parents are kindly asked to provide nappy rash cream daily, which will be applied with consent when needed.

Potty Training: A Gentle and Child-Led Transition

Potty training is an exciting step towards independence, and at Daisy Fays we approach it with patience, empathy and positivity. There is no pressure or expectation — every child develops at their own pace.

Potty training begins only when a child is settled in the nursery and showing readiness at home. Parents play a vital role in this process, as their insights help us ensure a consistent and supportive experience between home and nursery.

Children are gently encouraged to use the potty or toilet at regular intervals and are always praised for their efforts, not just successes. Accidents are handled discreetly and sensitively to protect children’s confidence and emotional wellbeing.

To support independence, we ask parents to provide:

  • Three full sets of labelled spare clothing
  • Easy-to-manage clothing that children can remove independently

If a child finds the process overwhelming or experiences frequent accidents, we may temporarily return to pull-ups or nappies to reduce pressure. This flexible approach ensures potty training remains a positive and confidence-building experience.

Toilet Training: Building Confidence and Independence

Toilet training marks a significant milestone in a child’s self-care journey. At Daisy Fays, toilet training begins only when a child demonstrates readiness and confidence at home, including awareness of their bodily cues and minimal accidents.

Our role is to reinforce this learning gently and consistently. Children are encouraged to use the toilet regularly throughout the day and are supported to dress and undress independently, with reassurance and help when needed.

We keep detailed records of toileting routines and maintain open communication with parents to ensure continuity between home and nursery. Praise, encouragement and incentive systems such as stickers or charts are used to celebrate progress and build confidence.

Should a child experience regression due to routine changes or developmental phases, our team responds with additional support rather than pressure. In some cases, a short pause or step back may be the most nurturing option.

Health, Safety and Safeguarding: Always Our Priority

Across all stages of personal care, health and safety remain paramount. Our team follow strict hygiene procedures, use PPE appropriately and adhere to robust safeguarding policies to ensure children’s comfort, dignity and wellbeing at all times.

Transparency is actively encouraged, and any concerns are promptly reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead in line with our Whistleblowing Policy.

Working in Partnership with Families

We believe the most successful outcomes happen when nurseries and families work together. Parents are kept informed through daily logs and verbal updates, and we welcome open communication should any challenges arise.

By sharing information, aligning routines and supporting one another, we ensure every child feels secure, understood and celebrated as they master these important life skills.

A Positive Journey, Every Step of the Way

At Daisy Fays, nappy changing, potty training and toilet training are treated with care, respect and understanding. By creating a calm, supportive environment and recognising each child’s individuality, we help children grow in confidence and independence — one small milestone at a time.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s readiness or progress, our team is always happy to help.
