Understanding Government Funded Childcare
At Daisy Fays, we know that navigating childcare funding can feel overwhelming at times—but we’re here to make it simple and stress-free. There are a number of government schemes available to support families with the cost of nursery care, and we’re always happy to help you find the option that works best for you.
Funded Childcare for Working Families
If you’re a working parent, you may be eligible for 30 hours of funded childcare per week, available across 38 weeks of the year (term time). If you and your partner live together, you’ll need to apply jointly.
To qualify, each parent must:
- Work a minimum of 16 hours per week (including self-employment)
- Earn less than £100,000 per year
- Be eligible even if on sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, or certain benefits
In practice, we ‘stretch’ these hours across the full year to support families who need childcare beyond term time. This typically equates to around 22 funded hours per week for up to 51 weeks, depending on your child’s age and the term they join us. Our team will be on hand to explain exactly what’s available to you based on your local authority and your child’s schedule.
You can also pay for extra sessions or full days outside of your funded entitlement—these are referred to as non-funded hours, and we’ll work closely with you to build a flexible plan that suits your family’s needs.
Universal Funded Hours for 3 & 4 Year Olds
All children aged 3 and 4 automatically qualify for 15 hours of government-funded childcare per week during term time, regardless of your income or working status.
We can also stretch these hours across the full year, providing around 11 funded hours per week for 51 weeks, helping to maintain continuity and routine for your child.
Funded Childcare for 2 Year Olds
Some families may be entitled to 15 hours of funded childcare for their 2-year-old. You may be eligible if:
- You are receiving certain benefits
- Your child receives Disability Living Allowance or has identified Special Educational Needs (SEND)
- Your child is under a guardianship or kinship care arrangement
- Your child is currently in the care of the local authority
These places can be limited, so we recommend contacting your local Daisy Fays nursery to discuss availability and how to apply.
